Wanna get strong?

Jen Cardella is Lean Lifting at RedBlackGym This program is designed specifically for women who want to go heavy and perfect their Olympic lifting skills and technique. This is the perfect opportunity to gain a solid foundation and work on the specifics with one of RBG’s top female coaches.

Benchmark: CrossFit Total

July's Benchmark..... CROSSFIT TOTAL!
What it is?  You have 3 attempts to find your MAX Squat, Press and Deadlift.
Your Score: is the total of the three lifts.  **For Example Squat: 160lbs, Press: 75lbs Dealdlift, 185lbs, Your Total would be: 420

Read Why Coach Jessica Sharratt loves coaching Women through CrossFit Total
"'CrossFit Total'  for the women's classes. I love when the women's classes do total!!! Why? Because when most women start crossfitting and they see a max or heavy lift on the board they don't like it. They ask me things like, "are we not doing any cardio today?" Or, "I don't want to get big so can I just do lighter weights more reps?" Or they tell me there is no way I can squat that much, press that much or lift that much. 3 months later the magic of crossfit happens and they are loading up the bars and hitting HUGE PR's and laughing, high fiving and encouraging each other and at the end of the class they feel empowered!"

Ok, let's get down for to the fun... What big #'s are the Ladies of CrossFit Central hitting? Below are just some of the MANY July's PR's!

An Inspiring Testimonial!

Sun, Coach Jen, Wanda

The letter I'm about to share with you is a true testament to what kind of impact Crossfit can have on a person's life. More and more lately we have been seeing transformations from people from all walks of life, in all stages and phases of life. (Check some out here and here)

Not only that, but this letter also shows the true care and commitment that your Coaches have towards you and helping you achieve your goals. Not only do we have the best Clients in the world, we also have the best Coaches too!!

Hi Jessica and Jen,

I just want to share an article with you about "5 Reasons Why Women Should Lift Heavier Weights".  Out of the five reasons, one of the most important one for me to lift weights was reason #2.  I'm 52 and I was diagnosed with osteopenia.  I have a lot of work to do to stay healthy.  When you are over 50 you do have to work much harder than a body that is twenty years younger.  My health is important to me, because it's an investment in my life!

Here is about something happened this week that I would also like to share it with you.  On Monday Women's CrossFit class this week, a lot of people in the class was gathering around me and telling me how much muscles I have gained and my arms was looking great.  I didn't know what to say, but I was excited to tell them about the new "Lean Lifting" class that I have been attending for a month. The class has given me a lot of confidence when it comes to lifting the weights.  I understand each step in details and have more time in the class to practice the movements.  So, when I'm in my Women's CrossFit class, I don't feel scare of lifting the weights on my own.  The two classes had worked really well together! However, I was puzzled when Meredith said the Lean Lifting class wouldn't be for her because she doesn't want huge muscles and have bulky arms like a man.  I think she said that because of the old weighty myth if women weight-train too much they will bulk up.  I wish more women would learn to embrace in working more with weights and will learn to understand that weight lifting has a lot of benefits for their body and it will not make their arms bulky like a man!  I wouldn't do it if that was the case. Definitely I can achieve the look if I'm strictly pumping irons 24/7, drinking high protein drinks, and take steroids!  Can we put  something on the CrossFit website and end the mighty weighty myth that still on a lot of women's minds.

Today was a good day!  With just one month of "Lean Lifting" class, it has made a big difference with my confidence. My confidence came through today with my power clean in class.  I did my power clean with confidence and even got my elbows pointing out instead to the ground. It was a great feeling!  Thank you to you both for making my day so GREAT!

~Wanda

Have a fabulous weekend! Go lift something heavy!!

A Note to the (Not So) Average Woman

Crushing it at the 2nd Annual Women's Challenge

This was forwarded to me by some of my fellow CF Central Women Coaches. It's a GREAT post! Brought to you by 70's Big:

"I wrote this for a friend of mine and some ladies she trains. I figured I’d post it here, because I spent some time writing it for the specific audience. I’m not saying there will be droves of women wanting to lift after I post it, but if you have any friends that should see it, print it out and show them.
Hi. I’ve heard that you are starting or thinking about starting a new exercise program. Your new exercise program may be CrossFit, P90x, boot camp, or any related intensity based conditioning activity. Your goals in starting this program will probably revolve around wanting to be sexy, healthy, and physically able to enjoy an active lifestyle. I commend you on your choice because it’s the first step in achieving those goals. Your program choice may even be the gateway to sport and/or athletic activity. In any case, there is a lot to learn regarding what is best to achieve your goal, because, well, conventional wisdom hasn’t been truthful to you.
Since you are investing time and money into an exercise program I’ll have to assume you are decently serious in achieving your goals. It’s perfectly fine to want to be sexier or healthier. However, “sexier” is typically interpreted as “losing weight” and “toning up”. What this ACTUALLY means is “losing body fat and having some muscle underneath it to have a nice figure”. Losing weight will just make you skinny. Skinny is not good.
Exhibit A. Skinny=Fail
Losing body fat to get sexy isn’t only about burning and eating less calories: you must alter your metabolism in the short and long term. Exercising in a way that forces your body to optimally metabolize fat and produce lean body mass is imperative for quick results. Nothing does this better than getting stronger through weight training. I realize weight training has a horrible stigma, so I’m taking the time to highlight some of the perks that lifting weights can provide on your journey to a great body and health.
None of the women I have ever coached gained body fat from lifting weights. In fact, they lost body fat while gaining muscle. This happens because lifting weights elevates your metabolism while you’re doing it AND for the rest of the day. A higher metabolism means you’re burning more calories. Doing cardio at a moderate intensity doesn’t elevate your metabolism at all after you stop doing it. High intensity based conditioning/cardio exercise has a similar, albeit lesser, metabolic effect when compared to lifting, but it doesn’t have the same strength and muscle building properties as lifting weights.

When you lift weights, you break up muscle fibers. Your body needs to repair them and improve them so they can either handle more in the future or handle that same load easier. That whole process elevates the metabolism, it makes you stronger, and it will increase the muscle tissue (a little). But you will NOT be getting bulky. You literally have one tenth the testosterone of a guy, and that means you won’t be building muscle very easily. If you haven’t been a muscular woman your whole life, why would you suddenly become “bulky” now? Unless you’re using some kind of steroids, you don’t have anything to worry about.

Lucky for you, muscle tissue is “metabolically active tissue”. This means that the more muscle you have, the higher your metabolism and the better it will metabolize fat. Getting stronger means more muscle which means less fat. To top it off, you’ll be building muscle in your legs and rump, and this will garner positive attention from men and women alike. Whether you are skinny or a bigger gal, squatting and deadlifting shapes your booty in the most desirable way.
Lifting positively effects your metabolism for fat burning purposes and can help shape you into that appropriately curvy figure you’ve always wanted, but that isn’t all lifting is good for. More muscle mass and less body fat have tons of health implications. You’ll find that you don’t get sick as much, you’re able to handle viruses/infections easier, you won’t feel fatigued throughout the day, and you’ll start improving on all of those little tests doctors like to give you on your yearly check ups (not the gyno, the real, non-creepy doctor). Bone density will no longer be an issue because you’ll surpass the credentials for “weight bearing exercise” by training with a barbell. When you are stronger, your conditioning workouts will be more effective because you’ll be able to do more work, go faster, and/or go longer. If you are doing any of these three things, then you’re getting more worth out of the time you are exercising than you were when you were weak (i.e. you get sexier/healthier faster). If you’re going to invest the money and time, you might as well use it optimally!

Whether it be feeling better, getting in shape, looking better, or being more healthy, weight training will help get you there. As you get stronger you’ll be delighted to see your lifts increase gradually yet steadily. When you’re squatting 120 pounds, you’ll look back and think, “I used to only squat 45 lbs…I’ve come a long way.” All women who lift cite this sense of empowerment they get from lifting as an exhilarating feeling (in six months you’ll be able to lift more than most “men”). I’m not suggesting that lifting weights should be your primary training method, but when your trainer suggests or implements it, don’t give her so much hell. The fact that getting you stronger is part of her plan means you hired the right person."

Will running on the treadmill and doing machines prepare you for this?

Step right up...

Taken from Crossfit Watertown:

Rarely do I see women overestimate themselves.

We are excellent pacers. It’s like something intrinsic to our nature — some survival of the species instinct that almost forces us to go lighter, go just a tad slower, “save something” for the last round. We worry that our form is not right, that we’re not doing things well enough, that we should stay in the “minor leagues” just a tad longer before we’re ready to play with the big girls.

I saw it when I raced mountain bikes in California. The women’s “Beginner” category would be the largest, with a small Intermediate, and very few Expert or Pro racers. Even tough female mountain bike riders were reluctant to bump up from Beginner to Intermediate, scared that they were not ready for the next level. Over on the men’s side, the Intermediate cat was huge, with guys fighting to get into it, to prove themselves, to make it to the next level. The only men who stayed at the Beginner level were sand-baggers — guys with small cojones who wanted to dominate longer in the small pond with the little fish.

It’s time to get out of the small pond.

Women with the small weights on the bar and the extra gas left in the tank, I dare you to grow some cojones. Not literally. (Ewww.) But figuratively. Stop thinking of yourself as weaker than you are. Banish those “slow” or “old” thoughts from your head. Throw some mother****ing weight on the bar and make the lift happen. And run faster. And try for the extra pull-up and the handstand push-up. Maybe it won’t be perfect. Maybe you’ll fail. Maybe you’ll fail a bunch. I don’t care. That’s okay. You won’t die from failure here. More importantly, you’ll be living. Someone kinda famous once said to me: “You’re going to misstep and you’re going to find success. So what. I love you no matter how it turns out and most things are fixable (or not, so ****ing what).” This is the way to live life — with these thoughts in your head. Be bold, be brave, be invincible.

So, the next time you’re setting up your bar in a workout or you’re grabbing a kettlebell, go heavier. It’s worth a try. You might succeed, you might fail, but I’m going to love you no matter how it turns out.

(Words by Lisbeth Darsh of CrossFit Watertown.)

I came across this article last week and it really struck me. I thought I was the only one who tries to "strategize" my WODs by maybe not lifting quite what I'm capable of, saving a little stamina so I can "make it" to the end and finish the WOD with some gas left in the tank. I'm beginning to overcome some of that. But it's a mental battle with myself each and every time. There's no worse feeling than finishing a WOD and feeling like you could've done more. There's no better feeling than finishing a WOD and feeling like you absolutely crushed it.

This article is a great reminder for us to Go Harder. Lift Heavier. And Breathe Less. -(to quote our very own SicFit.com superblogger Jen Cardella)

Why Crossfit Women?

This is a question I've heard a few times over the months. "Why take a women's only class? What's the difference?" and "Is it easier?"

I wanted to address this from my own opinion as well as from snippets of conversation had over the past year.

I think a Women's Only class has a lot to do with personal preference and what you're looking for. People pass by Crossfit Central all the time and think, "What the hell are those people doing? The sun's not even up!" (Direct quote from my husband's boss). Even though we all know better, it looks slightly intimidating. For me, joining a Women's class was way less scary.

Now, don't get me wrong- Carey and Jen can be the scariest ladies on the planet at 5:45 am if you aren't working as hard as they think you should! Women's Only classes are definitely NOT easier. The environment in a Women's class is very supportive- especially when the other ladies in the class are yelling at you to push yourself then cheering you on as you finally get your chin over the bar for your first kipping pull-up. Maybe we are all collectively cheering because we were always told that girls don't do pull-ups- Nonetheless, it is refreshing to be in an environment that is non-catty, non-gossipy, and no B.S. that sometimes comes with groups of females.

I really look forward to seeing the ladies in my class each morning. We know each other's strengths and weaknesses, and I know I'll hear about it if I don't show up! But besides all that, I know that we are all going through this together. We're trying to make our way through this thing- Paleo challenges, sugar detox, falling off the wagon and getting back on again, PRs, Birthday Burpees, husbands, kids, boyfriends, girlfriends... It's a New Normal (sorry. had to use it again)

So if you are looking for something new or to change it up a bit, consider a Women's Only class.

Next up...I am Crossfit!

How were you introduced to Crossfit?

Favorite place to eat in Austin: Buenos Aires Cafe

Song that gets me pumped up for a workout: Anything by Beastie Boys

Something nobody really knows about me or would be surprised to know: I have 5 younger brothers and sisters- all are or will be taller than me.
