Champion Mindset Competition Series Finale

Great work to the ladies that completed the Helen Challenge. Competition is just the carrot you sometimes need to get into your mental game! The ladies worked on Visualization, Changing false beliefs, practicing proper technique after watching video of themselves do the movement, setting goals and creating a game plan. We are learning that it takes a combination of all these to make for a well improved time!

17 women showed back up to complete the Helen workout and 13 showed an improved time of 2 to 120 sec of time off their last performance! Great work ladies! We had 12 minutes to complete the WOD! Those that know Helen is no joke of a workout!

Ladies great work and next up Grace!

Meanwhile, Partner B is doing:

After both Parnters completed everything, they both ran up through the UTB area, around the pillar, and back through the Finish Line!

4 Things Women Should be Doing

I found this article on Yahoo this morning. Finally the mainstream press is catching on! Yay Crossfit!!

If your workouts consist of doing light weights and steady-state cardio, you might be in for some bad news: These things alone won’t likely get you the results you’re after, say experts. To increase your fitness level, burn fat, and improve muscle tone, you’ve got to step up your game.
Here are four things women tend to skip that can deliver serious results.
1. High-intensity training.
All that time coasting on the elliptical at a comfortable pace probably hasn’t done much for your body, says Panama-based trainer Belinda Benn, creator of the Breakthrough Physique home fitness system. In fact, the biggest mistake women make in their training is not exercising with enough intensity, she says.
High-intensity interval training, or HIIT, is typically a 10- to 20-minute workout that alternates short, intense bursts of activity with moderate-exertion recovery periods. “High-intensity interval training  is the best way to improve your overall fitness, burn fat, and stimulate your hormones for a stronger body,” says Benn.
How to tell if you’re training hard enough? Look to your body for clues, Benn says. Good indicators are sweating, increased heart rate, and lactic acid production (i.e., feeling the “burn”) during exercise. Moderate muscle soreness for up to a few days post-workout is also a good sign. “If you feel nothing,” Benn says, “you probably didn’t work out hard enough.”
2. Heavier lifting.
For most women, a typical weight-training session equals light dumbbell exercises, says Toronto-based strength and conditioning specialist Craig Ballantyne, creator of the Turbulence Training Program. But doing fewer reps with more weight—say, 8 reps per set with a 15-pound dumbbell, instead of 15 reps with an 8-pound one—will burn more fat, he says. Lifting heavier will also increase your strength and muscle definition.
Start by swapping out your normal weights for slightly heavier ones, and gradually work your way up.
3. Upper body workouts.
Women tend to store body fat around the waist, hips, and thighs, so that’s where they typically focus their exercise efforts—neglecting their upper bodies, Benn says.
But you can’t spot-reduce fat, and sticking with what’s easy can stunt your progress, says Benn. Because you may feel weak while attempting pull-ups for the first time, Benn suggests doing the hard stuff at the start of your workout, “when you’re freshest and feeling mentally strong.”
“Focusing on underdeveloped muscles will improve the contours of your body,” Benn says.
4. Training with a barbell.
Think barbells are synonymous with back-breaking chest presses? Not so. “You can do a tremendous workout just with a barbell,” Benn says. “If you’re holding a bar rather than using two separate weights, it forces you to get your body  in sync.”
Barbells are great for both upper- and lower-body exercises. Balancing one across your shoulders while doing squats, lunges, or walking lunges helps develop posture and balance, Benn says.
If you’re flirting with a barbell for the first time, go as light as you need to. Even 10 pounds is a good start.
Bonus tip:
If you’re worried you’ll bulk up with any of these exercises, consider your body type. Benn says women generally fall into two categories: those who build muscle easily, and those who don’t. If you build muscle easily, she suggests emphasizing high-intensity exercises. If you develop muscle slowly, you’ll benefit from spending more time on heavy lifting.

Showing Up is Half the Battle

I got the following voicemail from my mom tonight. She's 61 and just started Crossfit a few months ago.

"Hi Honey. I just wanted to share with you something that will make you laugh. I've missed my Crossfit class for a few weeks now because I was sick then I was out of town, so I decided to go tonight, but man was I dreading it! I was talking myself out of going the whole drive there- asking myself if I felt ok, maybe I should just go home and rest, etc. etc.

I pulled up to the gym and just sat there looking at the bright lights in the gym. Finally I got out of the car and slowly walked in. But you know, I am SO glad I went! I feel so great! Invigorated and fresh and just really feeling good. (laughing) "

I've been there. So. many. times.

In the past two days I've come across 2 blog posts- one from a friend, Catherine, who is jumping back into working out after a hiatus. Read about it here.

The other blog is from a girl who has been Crossfitting for a few months now, but is just now starting her Paleo journey- I don't even know her but am so proud of her for taking such huge steps! Read about it here.

Sometimes it seems like you will never be where you want to be. I remember doing Angie my first day at Crossfit Central in January of 2009. I did jumping pullups on the box and actually shed a few tears around #70 thinking "what the hell am I doing here at 5:30am in the damn cold?!" It was months and months before I felt like I made improvements. I would try to keep up with Erika and wonder if I would ever be able to do a pushup on my toes. All the movements were hard. I was last every time...

Sometimes you just need a little help!
Some things I've picked up along the way:

  • Nobody is watching you- they are too busy trying not to die or drop weights on their head!
  • Stop comparing yourself to other people in your class- everyone is at a different place- you'll get there
  • Ask for help- it's the only way you'll improve
  • Just show up- not every day is gonna be a PR, but you'll be so glad you came
Written by Ali Incredible from Rainier Crossfit
I was chatting in the locker room after the WOD and the woman I was talking to was dissappointed in her performance. Relatively new to CrossFit, she persisted that she had performed terribly. What I would like to say is this: you showed up. After two years of CrossFit I have had peaks and valleys, been discouraged and elated, but when it comes down to it, crappy performance or PR, I showed up. Usually, I am the last to finish a workout, but sure as shit, when I get in my car after, there is always a little smile. Best or worst, congratulate yourself on coming. You’re among a small group of people that show up knowing you will get your ass kicked. If you’re new, please know that people who have been doing this for years, studs in the gym, do not PR everyday, they don’t set record times every day they come. It’s about effort, and half the battle is showing up. Next time you feel bad about your performance, tell yourself you’ll do better next time, look around you at the amazing folks that show up to sweat next to you, and smile.

New Month, New Benchmarks, New Faces!

Nichole during the Women's Challenge

Today was the start of September programs and a NEW Benchmark:

"CC Flyers"
400 m run
21 box jumps
12 OH squats
3 rounds

The coaches and staff at Crossfit Central have been working hard to come up with new monthly Benchmarks to replace some of the older ones that have been used for a few years now. Monthly benchmarks are a great way to keep track of your progress and see your growth over time.

There were a lot of new faces this morning, and on behalf of the Crossfit Central community- Welcome!

my Mom aka Future Firebreather!

Speaking of new faces, I have to give a shout out to my Mom- after a year of bugging her about Crossfit, she found an affiliate in Houston, signed up and went to her very first class tonight!

Have you ever talked to someone after they've done their very first Crossfit workout? It's really neat- I heard the excitement in her voice talking about doing a deadlift for the first time in her life, and how she had to do lateral burpees over the barbell and then had to jump rope but she hadn't done that in 20 years! She was worried she would throw up but made it through and her coach was nice and didn't yell at her- all the things we went through, right?!

Crossfit makes you feel like a kid again. Crossfit makes you fall in love with fitness again.... or maybe for the first time in your life. I'm so proud of my mom, and I can't wait to see how this trickles into other areas of her life. Come on, now.... you know it always does!

Have a great week.
